The purpose of this lesson is to teach young students about respectful interactions, as well as to celebrate diversity.
Everyone deserves respect.
Being different from others is a special and beautiful thing.
Celebrating diversity means honoring the differences in all.
The world is full of different cultures and traditions. None is better than the other.
Learning more about the world and diversity in the world is powerful.
Activity 1: (10 minutes) PYRAMID ANCHOR CHART
Introduce the lesson with the slideshow and student check-in questions. Review the Pyramid of Happiness anchor chart. Review the third level of the pyramid and perform that action (wrap arms around yourself in a hug). Make the connection of respect to the feeling of belonging and connection. Remind students about the actions associated with each level of the pyramid. Have a discussion:
Activity 2: (10 minutes) BRAINSTORM & VIDEO
Ask students ways that they show respect, or care, for others. List ideas on the board. Watch the Sesame Street video about respect.
Are there other ways to show respect that can be added to the original list?
Activity 3: (15 minutes) DIRECT INSTRUCTION & ROLE PLAY
One way to show respect is to use nice manners. Use the presentation slides to teach about common manners K–2 students can show. Allow students time to roleplay and practice with a peer to show proper manners.
Have a discussion about the word culture. Help students understand that when we talk about culture we are referring to our language, food, dress, traditions, and beliefs. Invite students to share with a partner some aspects of their own culture.
Activity 4: (15 minutes) VIDEO, DISCUSSION & FURTHER RESEARCH
What is diversity? Diversity is a word for the differences in everyone around us.
Watch the Small Talk: Differences video. Read the book All Are Welcome Here by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman. Challenge students to pay attention to how many differences they see in the story. Take time to point out various aspects of culture in the story (food, clothing, traditions). Discuss differences with a smile and positivity. Invite students to ask questions about the various traditions, clothing, and people. A possible follow up activity is to invite students to learn more about various people and cultures around the world by having your school librarian or media specialist share various informational texts.
Invite students to go home and ask their parents about some of their cultural traditions (favorite foods, clothing, traditions) in their own family. Invite students to share or invite parents as guest speakers.
Activity 5: (10 minutes) VIDEO & DISCUSSION
Honoring differences and diversity is showing respect! As we watch the video “Hair Love,” look for ways that the characters show respect and celebrate differences. Show the video.

Actividad 1: (10 minutos) CARTA DE ANCLAJE DE LA PIRÁMIDE
Presente la lección con la presentación de diapositivas y las preguntas de registro de los estudiantes. Revise el gráfico de anclaje de la Pirámide de la Felicidad. Repase el tercer nivel de la pirámide y realice esa acción (envuélvase en un abrazo). Hacer la conexión del respeto al sentimiento de pertenencia y conexión. Recuerde a los estudiantes las acciones asociadas con cada nivel de la pirámide. Tener una discucion:
Actividad 2: (10 minutos) LLUVIA DE IDEAS & VÍDEO
Pregunte a los estudiantes cómo muestran respeto o interés por los demás. Haga una lista de ideas en la pizarra. Mire el video de Barrio Sésamo sobre el respeto.
¿Hay otras formas de mostrar respeto que se puedan agregar a la lista original?
Actividad 3: (15 minutos) INSTRUCCIÓN DIRECTA & JUEGO DE ROL
Una forma de mostrar respeto es tener buenos modales. Use las diapositivas de la presentación para enseñar modales comunes que los estudiantes de K–2 pueden mostrar. Permita que los estudiantes tengan tiempo para jugar roles y practicar con un compañero para mostrar modales adecuados.
Tengan una discusión sobre la palabra cultura. Ayude a los estudiantes a comprender que cuando hablamos de cultura nos referimos a nuestro idioma, comida, vestimenta, tradiciones y creencias. Invite a los estudiantes a compartir con un compañero algunos aspectos de su propia cultura.
Actividad 4: (15 minutos) VIDEO, DISCUSIÓN & MÁS INVESTIGACIÓN
¿Qué es la diversidad? La diversidad es una palabra para las diferencias en todos los que nos rodean.
Mire el Pequeña charla: Video de diferencias . Lea el libro Todos son bienvenidos aquí de Alexandra Penfold y Suzanne Kaufman . Desafíe a los estudiantes a que presten atención a cuántas diferencias ven en la historia. Tómese el tiempo para señalar varios aspectos de la cultura en la historia (comida, vestimenta, tradiciones). Discuta las diferencias con una sonrisa y positivismo. Invite a los estudiantes a hacer preguntas sobre las diversas tradiciones, vestimentas y personas. Una posible actividad de seguimiento es invitar a los estudiantes a aprender más sobre diversas personas y culturas de todo el mundo haciendo que el bibliotecario de la escuela o el especialista en medios compartan varios textos informativos.
Invite a los estudiantes a ir a casa y preguntarles a sus padres sobre algunas de sus tradiciones culturales (comidas favoritas, ropa, tradiciones) en su propia familia. Invite a los estudiantes a compartir o invite a los padres como oradores invitados.
Actividad 5: (10 minutos) VIDEO & DISCUSIÓN
¡Honrar las diferencias y la diversidad es mostrar respeto! Mientras miramos el video “Amor por el cabello”, busque formas en que los personajes muestren respeto y celebren las diferencias. Muestre el video.
