The Importance of Empathy:

The purpose of this lesson is to teach students to learn and think deeply about the importance of empathy in their own lives. Students will contemplate the obstacles related to showing and giving empathy to someone else. In addition, students will learn strategies to further develop and apply empathy in their lives.
Empathy is defined as the action of understanding, caring, and vicariously feeling the experiences of others. It is easy to believe that there is a shortage of empathy in our world today… but how can we change that? By becoming people who see others, include others, and ultimately choose to love.
Inclusion is a vital aspect to empathy. Without it, we could not understand the feelings of those outside of ourselves and our circles. By being willing to step outside of our comfort zone today, we create a future of comfortable diversity, empathy, service, and respect.
Activity 1: (15 minutes) IMPORTANCE OF EMPATHY
Have the class watch this video about the importance of empathy. Divide the class into groups of 4–5. Each group will be given a paper to write their responses to the following prompts:

As a class, watch this video about empathy shortage. Have a discussion:
Activity 3: (15 minutes) TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
Discuss as a class the following quote from To Kill a Mockingbird:
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” (Atticus Finch)
Activity 4: (12 minutes) THE HUMAN FAMILY
Start by watching this video about the human family. Discuss the following prompts as a class or in small groups:
Activity 5: (15 minutes) QUOTE DISCUSSION
The social psychologist Jeremey Rifkin proposed the idea that “There is no empathy in a utopia. Without suffering, empathy would cease to exist.”
Have a couple students share a final takeaway that they believe is the most important thing they learned during this lesson on empathy and inclusion.
