Unit 8: Esteem

This unit introduces students to the concept of esteem which includes our desire for social acceptance and status. Esteem is acquired as we learn to respect and celebrate our strengths as well as achieve success that is validated by others and by experience.

Unit 7: Academic Well-Being

This unit introduces students to behaviors and mindsets that help acquire the knowledge and skills to be successful in an academic setting as well as to acquire active and lifelong learning strategies.

Unit 6: Mental Well-Being

This unit introduces students to the brain and critical thinking processes that help us learn. Mental well-being refers to the brain’s thinking, processing, and learning systems as well as the deliberate mindfulness strategies students can incorporate for a growth mindset.

Unit 5: Emotional Well-Being

This unit introduces students to the competencies associated with emotional well-being. Emotional well-being is identifying, understanding, and managing inner feelings, thoughts, and emotions. This unit also helps students understand how to create habits of happiness, adjust to change, and create resilience, perseverance, and grit.

Unit 4: Social Well-Being

This unit introduces students to skills that support social well-being. Social well-being reflects the interactions with others in which students engage in positive relationships of belonging, attachment, and connection. The skills in this unit explores the skills of communication, empathy, diversity, and collaboration.

Unit 3: Physical Well-Being

This unit introduces students the basics of taking care of our physical bodies. Wellness refers to physical health and includes active and deliberate efforts to stay healthy, self-care, staying active, and managing our sleep and stress.

Unit 2: Conditions for Well-Being

This unit includes a review of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs as a framework for establishing the conditions needed for teachers and students to be their best selves and to do their best work. When these conditions are in place, we can begin to address and deliberately acquire well-being skills and dispositions.

Unit 1: Innate Needs

This unit includes an introduction to the concept of innate needs as well as to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. An introduction to the In Focus Well-being framework is also included in this unit that provides a roadmap for the learning throughout the year.
