What Causes Body Odor:
How to Fix Bad Breath:
Access the student reflection APP which provides an opportunity for students and teachers to reflect and respond to topic-specific prompts.
Activity 1: (15 minutes) SELF-ASSESSMENT
Ask students to do a quick “brain drain” about HYGIENE. During a “brain drain,” each student quietly writes as much as they can about a topic (including definitions, examples, questions, concerns, etc.)
Give students the “Personal Hygiene Self-Assessment”. Students should answer questions about their own routine as well as questions about the tools necessary for good hygiene. (Encourage students to keep their eyes on their own papers, as this can be an embarrassing topic for some students).
Have the class look over their own Personal Hygiene Self-Assessments. Students should mark their papers as follows:
Activity 2: (8 minutes) KWL CHART & CHOICE BOARD
Each student should make a K.W.L. chart for part 3b (two hygiene topics that need more attention). A K.W.L. chart has three columns:
Ask students to record information under their K and W columns pertaining to two hygiene topics that need more attention. (For example, “I already know that washing my armpits prevents body odor–Column K; I want to know why I have body odor in the first place–Column W”). Students will fill in column “L” during step 5.
Activity 3: (30 minutes) CHOICE BOARD
Provide students with the “Hygiene Activity Choice Board” and ask them to complete four of the activities. (If devices are not available, use a teacher computer and overhead projector to navigate activities together. Alternatively, you could print out copies of the reading articles and have students choose which they would like to read.)
Activity 4: (4 minutes) DISCUSSION
Finish the lesson by giving students information about where they can get the tools necessary for proper hygiene. This information will be specific to your school and area but may include: specific teachers, the front office, the school nurse, the counseling office, local churches, or local food pantries.
