The purpose of this unit is for students to understand their basic needs of food, water, shelter, safety, and connection.
This lesson discusses the things that we all need to survive. Every child needs food, water, shelter, safety, and love or connection to grow and thrive. Rules are important, but it is important to understand why. Learning habits of being a good friend and making connections with others help us feel loved. It is important for children to know their needs, and how to ask for help in getting their needs met.
- Students learn the difference between wants and needs.

- We talk about things that are bothering us.
- Being kind in words and actions makes others feel loved.

- What is something you need? What is something you want?
- If you met someone new at school, what is something you could do to make them feel welcome?
- When is a good time to tell someone “No”?
- Who is your best friend, and what is your favorite thing to do together?
- What are the safety rules in your home? Make a list, talk about why that rule is important, and have your child help you illustrate the rules. Post them where they can remind everyone to stay safe at home.
- Practice being a friend. Use a stuffed animal as a “friend” and role play skills such as meeting a new friend, asking them to play, sharing, and resolving a disagreement.

El propósito de esta unidad es que los estudiantes entiendan sus necesidades básicas de alimentos, agua, refugio, seguridad y conexión.
Esta lección habla de las cosas que todos necesitamos para sobrevivir. Cada niño necesita comida, agua, refugio, seguridad y amor o conexión para crecer y prosperar. Las reglas son importantes, pero es importante entender por qué. Aprender los hábitos de ser un buen amigo y hacer conexiones con otros nos ayuda a sentirnos amados. Es importante que los niños conozcan sus necesidades y cómo pedir ayuda para satisfacer sus necesidades.

- Practique como ser un amigo. Use un animal de peluche como “amigo” y practique habilidades como conocer a un nuevo amigo, pedirles que jueguen, compartan y resuelvan un desacuerdo.
