The purpose of this lesson is to help students explore the complex idea of identity and how it relates to respect. Students will be able to recognize and celebrate their own identity and culture as well as the unique identities and cultures around them.
Identity is concerned largely with the question “Who are you?” which can be broken down into our sense of self, or the global understanding a person has of themselves; this includes roles, attributes, skills, abilities, disabilities, behaviors, and associations that we consider most important to us. There are five important things to note about identity:
- There are many elements of identity.
- There are observable elements of identity as well as non-observable elements.
- Identity relates to our values and the choices we make.
- Identities change as we grow and have different life experiences.
- The way we view others’ identities is largely influenced by the way we view ourselves.
Once we recognize our own identities and the diversity around us, it becomes important to recognize and respect the identity and diversity of others.
Showing respect to others begins by acknowledging, respecting, and celebrating how we are the same and different. We show respect by treating others the way we want to be treated.

NOTE: The following activities have been designed specifically for Younger High School Students (Grade 9- Essential Foundational Activities) and Older High School Students (Grade 10- Extended Deeper Activities).
Invite students to use the Reflection APP and respond to the prompts for this lesson.
Activity 1: (30 minutes) WHAT YOU SEE & WHAT YOU DON’T
There are many elements of identity. Ask the students:
- What shapes a person’s identity?
Invite students to create a cognitive map of the elements of identity. Guide the discussion to include as many elements as possible. It might be helpful to facilitate the discussion by sharing some of the following categories:
- Physical appearance (age, gender, size, race, the way I dress and present myself physically)
- Current and future occupation (student, teacher, doctor, plumber)
- Social relationships (friends, colleagues, acquaintances)
- Familial relationships (brother/sister, son/daughter, mother/father, cousin)
- Cultural connections (race, ancestry, traditions, language, beliefs, values)
- Interests, talents, extracurricular activities (athlete, musician, artist, volunteer)
- Affiliations and groups (religious, community, sports)
- Abilities/disabilities (smart, funny, hard-working, honest)
Share the image of the iceberg. Just like an iceberg, people are complex and have both observable and non-observable elements associated with their identities.
Invite students to use the iceberg graphic organizer and write down the things that are observable (visible, obvious, exposed, displayed, exhibited) characteristics of their identity. Then invite them to write down characteristics that are not visible (sheltered, hidden, concealed).
Invite students to choose someone in the class they feel comfortable with. Invite them to share one “non-observable” element of their identity with their partner. Have a class discussion.
- What do we observe about others?
- What is not observable about others?
- Which parts of the iceberg are more aligned with who you are and what matters to you? How does what we see versus what we don’t see influence how we describe our identity?
- Why don’t we share more about the “unobservable” elements of our identity?
- What do we often infer about others based on what we can observe or see on the surface?
- How does the glacier metaphor connect back to identity?
Activity 2: (30 minutes) M&M INTERVIEW
Divide the class into groups of 2–3. Each student receives a package of M&Ms. Assign 1 person to start the game by taking an M&M from their package. Have students answer the question associated with their color of M&M. After going through a few rounds, invite the groups to discuss the following prompts:
- How could I demonstrate more respect for you?
- How could I show up from a place of empathy for you?
Have a class discussion.
- What can we do as a class to treat each other with respect?
- What are the barriers to treating each other with respect?
- What strategies did you learn from your partner about how to show respect?
Activity 3: (15 minutes) ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL
Put a trash can at the front of the classroom and give each student a piece of paper. Tell students to crumple up the paper so it resembles a ball. Tell students that whomever can get their paper ball into the trash can will receive a prize (candy, extra credit, etc.). The catch is, students must remain seated in their chairs. You will immediately begin to hear complaints from the students in the back. Countdown from 3 and have students toss. Ask students the following questions:
- How did you feel about the activity?
- Why was this frustrating for those who sat in the back?
Show the image of equality vs. equity. Have a discussion.
- What is the difference between equity and equality?
- Can you think of an example of this in your own life?
What does equity and equality have to do with identity and respect?
Have a discussion.
- What is the definition of inclusion? Invite students to contribute their own ideas.
- What is an example of inclusion from your own life?
Share the definition of inclusion. The following are the goals of inclusion:
- Creating a space where everyone is seen, included, and celebrated.
- Creating a space where everyone’s narratives about who they are and their potential is acknowledged and supported.
- Creating a space where we respectfully and empathetically explore, engage, and evaluate complex ideas, multiple perspectives, and experiences.
Activity 4: (15 minutes) IDENTITY RESPECT INCLUSION
Share the image of Identity-Respect-Inclusion. Ask students to arrange themselves in groups of 4 or 5 to discuss the following questions:
- What does this image suggest?
- Why is the cycle circular?
- What do identity, respect, and inclusion have to do with each other?
- Do you believe it is possible to create an inclusive environment for all students? If no, why not? If yes, how?
Class Discussion: Have groups share what they discussed in regard to each of the questions posed.
Activity 5: (30 minutes) EVENTS THROUGH AN IRI LENS
As the teacher, choose ONE current local or national event. Invite students to read about it in various newspapers, watching the news from various sources. It is important that everyone review the event together to create shared knowledge. Using the graphic organizer, invite students to analyze the event from the lens of identity, respect, and inclusion.
- Who was involved in the event?
- How would the outcome have been different if they would have recognized and honored identity, treated each other with respect, and created an inclusive environment?
- How does identity relate to the event?
- How does respect relate to the event?
- How does inclusion relate to the event?
- What skills, changes, and policies would need to be in place for the ideal to occur?
- How can we apply it to our own lives and context?
- Reflect on what you as a group have learned about identity, respect, and inclusion.
A variation is for students to choose a piece of literature that they have read as a part of your class or another class. Choose an example of conflict. Analyze it through the IRI (identity, respect, inclusion) lens.
*Teacher Note: It is important that you give students time to succeed with this activity. Divide students into groups or partners, assign the activity as a homework assignment, create options so that all students can be successful.
Activity 6: (30 minutes) LINE GAME
What makes you who you are? Throw out some words that describe a person’s identity. It’s important to note that identity is ever evolving. How you describe yourself today may be completely different from how you describe yourself a year from now.
Once we recognize our own identities and the diversity around us, it becomes important to recognize and respect the identity and diversity of others. The way we view others’ identities is largely influenced by the way we view ourselves.
Showing respect to others begins by acknowledging, respecting, and celebrating how we are the same and different. We show respect by treating others the way we want to be treated.

Have a class discussion.
- What did you notice about the students, the teacher, as the game moved forward?
- How did the line game change the students’ perceptions of each other?
- How did the game open up a “space” for students to connect with each other in new and authentic ways?
One of the ways we show respect is to learn more about people, ideas, beliefs, and values that are different from our own.
Activity 7: (30 minutes) LINES OF SUCCESS
Students line up with their toes on line A in the classroom (you could also do this in the hall). They must start with both toes on the tape and leap forward. Put down a second line 30 inches in front of the first line (line B). Tell students that whoever can jump over line B will receive a treat, extra-credit, whatever you can come up with that would be desirable. Students may start complaining.
Once students have made the leap, ask the following:
- How did you feel about this activity?
- Did everyone have an equal chance for success?
- How could we make this opportunity more equitable (use the students’ suggestions to create a new challenge)?
(Equitable doesn’t mean everyone can do it, it simply means leveling the playing field.)
Once everyone has had an opportunity to earn the reward a second time, ask students the following:
- If your first opportunity was an example of equality and your second opportunity was an example of equity, explain the difference between those two concepts.
- Can you provide some additional examples?
Activity 8: (15 minutes) The Dot Game
Have students close their eyes. Walk around the classroom and place a dot on each student’s forehead. Ideally most students will have one of two colors. Students should not see the color of the dot on their forehead. Then tell students to group themselves without talking. Students will typically group themselves according to the color of the dot on their foreheads. Leaving students in the groups they have formed, ask the following:
- What just happened? (Someone will likely reference that two students were left out)
- For the students in the larger groups: How did you feel? What were you thinking as you looked around the room?
- For the students who were left out: How did you feel? What were you thinking?
- Did anyone attempt to include our two students who don’t have a group?
- When the exercise began, you were asked to group yourselves without talking, but I never said to group yourselves by the color of your dots. Why do you think that happened?
- Can you think of some examples from your daily life where a similar thing might happen? How do you typically group yourselves?
- How could we avoid having this happen in our school?
Have students group themselves in silence again. You can continue to discuss different groupings, or have students return to their seats. At the end of the activity
Have a discussion.
- What is the definition of inclusion? Invite students to contribute their own ideas.
- What is an example of inclusion from your own life?

*A variation is for students to choose a piece of literature that they have read as a part of your class or another class. Choose an example of conflict. Analyze it through the IRI (identity, respect, inclusion) lens.
Activity 10: (30 minutes) SOCRATIC SEMINAR
This activity gives students an opportunity to share what they learned through a socratic seminar. Watch this video to see an example of a socratic seminar and to review the protocol.
Set up the norms for the socratic seminar:
- Talk to each other, not just to the discussion leader or teacher.
- Refer to evidence from the text to support your ideas.
- Ask questions if you do not understand what someone has said, or you can paraphrase what another student has said for clarification (“I think you said this; is that right?”).
- You do not need to raise your hand to speak, but please pay attention to your “airtime”—how much you have spoken in relation to other students.
- Don’t interrupt.
- Don’t “put down” the ideas of another student. Without judging the student you disagree with, state your alternate interpretation or ask a follow-up question to help probe or clarify an idea.
Common statements or questions used during a socratic seminar activity include:
- Where does that idea come from in the text?
- What does this word or phrase mean?
- Can you say that in another way?
- Is this what you meant to say…?
- What do you think the author is trying to say?
- What else could that mean?
- Who was the audience for this text? How does that shape our interpretation of these words?
- Who was the author of this text? What do we know about him/her? How does that shape our understanding of these words?
Have students review their completed handouts from Activity 1.
Start the seminar with 10 students in the middle of the classroom. Invite students not in the seminar to “tap in” or “tap out” other students so that everyone has a chance to participate. Remind students that this is not a debate and there are no right or wrong answers. The purpose of this activity is to explore an event through the lens of identity, respect, and inclusion.
After the seminar, invite students back to their seat and write down their thoughts about their experience on their graphic organizer.
Have a class discussion.
- What did you learn about this event?
- How did your lens of identity, respect, and inclusion change your perspective about the event?
- How was the assignment and the socratic seminar an example of inclusion?
- What could we have done to make it more inclusive?
- How is identity reflected in behavior?
- Do you feel safe enough and comfortable enough to be your true, authentic self at school and at home? If so, why? If not, why not?
- What is the relationship between identity, respect, and inclusion?
- What do these ideas have to do with empathy?
- How can we be our true authentic selves in a world where people use 👍,👎,❤️to judge who we are and how we live our lives?
- How can we create a classroom and a school where we treat each other with respect?
- Acknowledge your own identity.
- Get to know people beyond what is observable.
- Acknowledge how we are the same.
- Honor how we are different.
- Celebrate how we are different.
- Think about how you would feel and treat others with the same respect.
- Create a space where everyone is seen, included, and celebrated.
- Respectfully and empathetically explore, engage, and evaluate complex ideas, multiple perspectives, and life experiences.
- Help students recognize groups of people they may have a “blindspot” for. A blindspot refers to a person or a group of people that you have not been aware of, or that you struggle to empathize with. Explain to students what a blindspot is and have them reflect on potential people or groups of people they may have a blindspot for. Once students identify their potential blindspots, explain to them that this is where the hard work begins. These are people that you need to practice respect for.

Dígales a los estudiantes que quien pueda meter su bola de papel en el basurero recibirá un premio (dulces, crédito extra, etc.). Actividad 5: (30 minutos) EVENTOS A TRAVÉS DE UNA LENTE IRI
Como maestro, elija UN evento local o nacional actual. Invite a los alumnos a leer sobre ello en varios periódicos, viendo las noticias de varias fuentes. Es importante que todos revisen el evento juntos para crear conocimiento compartido. Una variación es que los estudiantes elijan una obra de literatura que hayan leído como parte de su clase o de otra clase. Elige un ejemplo de conflicto. Analícelo a través de la lente IRI (identidad, respeto, inclusión).

Actividad 6: (30 minutos) JUEGO DE LÍNEA

Actividad 8: (15 minutos) El juego de los puntos

Los estudiantes típicamente se agruparán de acuerdo al color del punto en sus frentes. Dejando a los estudiantes en los grupos que han formado, pregunte lo siguiente:
- ¿Qué acaba de pasar? (Es probable que alguien haga referencia a que dos estudiantes quedaron fuera)
- Para los estudiantes en los grupos más grandes: ¿Cómo te sentiste? ¿Qué estabas pensando mientras mirabas alrededor de la habitación?
- Para los estudiantes que quedaron fuera: ¿Cómo se sintieron? ¿En qué estabas pensando?
- ¿Alguien intentó incluir a nuestros dos estudiantes que no tienen un grupo?
- Cuando comenzó el ejercicio, se les pidió que se agruparan sin hablar, pero nunca dije que se agruparan por el color de sus puntos. ¿Por qué crees que pasó eso?
- ¿Puedes pensar en algunos ejemplos de tu vida diaria en los que podría suceder algo similar? ¿Cómo se agrupan normalmente?
- ¿Cómo podemos evitar que esto suceda en nuestra escuela?
Pida a los estudiantes que se agrupen en silencio nuevamente. Puede continuar discutiendo diferentes agrupaciones o hacer que los estudiantes regresen a sus asientos. Al final de la actividad
Tener una discucion.
- ¿Cuál es la definición de inclusión? Invite a los estudiantes a contribuir con sus propias ideas.
- ¿Cuál es un ejemplo de inclusión de su propia vida?
Comparta la definición de inclusión. Los siguientes son los objetivos de la inclusión:
- Crear un espacio donde todos sean vistos, incluidos y celebrados.
- Crear un espacio donde se reconozcan y apoyen las narrativas de todos sobre quiénes son y su potencial.
- Crear un espacio donde exploramos, participamos y evaluamos con respeto y empatía ideas complejas, múltiples perspectivas y experiencias.
Actividad 9: (30 minutos) EVENTOS A TRAVÉS DE UNA LENTE IRI
*Nota para el maestro: Es importante que les dé tiempo a los estudiantes para que tengan éxito en esta actividad. Dividir a los estudiantes en grupos o compañeros, asigne la actividad como tarea para el hogar, cree opciones para que todos los estudiantes puedan tener éxito.
Como maestro, elija UN evento local o nacional actual. Invite a los alumnos a leer sobre ello en varios periódicos, viendo las noticias de varias fuentes. Es importante que todos revisen el evento juntos para crear conocimiento compartido. Los estudiantes pueden trabajar en pequeños grupos. Pida a los estudiantes que completen el folleto Identidad – Respeto – Inclusión.
*Una variación es que los estudiantes elijan una obra de literatura que hayan leído como parte de su clase o de otra clase. Elige un ejemplo de conflicto. Analícelo a través de la lente IRI (identidad, respeto, inclusión).
Actividad 10: (30 minutos) SEMINARIO SOCRATICO
Esta actividad brinda a los estudiantes la oportunidad de compartir lo que aprendieron a través de un seminario socrático. Mire este video para ver un ejemplo de seminario socrático y repasar el protocolo.
Establezca las normas para el seminario socrático:
- Hablen entre ustedes, no solo con el líder de la discusión o el maestro.
- Refiérase a la evidencia del texto para apoyar sus ideas.
- Haga preguntas si no entiende lo que alguien ha dicho, o puede parafrasear lo que otro estudiante ha dicho para aclaración (“Creo que dijiste esto, ¿es así?”).
- No es necesario que levante la mano para hablar, pero preste atención a su “tiempo de transmisión”: cuánto ha hablado en relación con otros estudiantes.
- No interrumpas.
- No “desprecies” las ideas de otro estudiante. Sin juzgar al estudiante con el que no está de acuerdo, establezca su interpretación alternativa o haga una pregunta de seguimiento para ayudar a sondear o aclarar una idea.
Las declaraciones o preguntas comunes utilizadas durante una actividad de seminario socrático incluyen:
- ¿De dónde viene esa idea en el texto?
- ¿Qué significa esta palabra o frase?
- ¿Puedes decir eso de otra manera?
- ¿Es esto lo que querías decir…?
- ¿Qué crees que el autor está tratando de decir?
- ¿Qué más podría significar eso?
- ¿Quién era la audiencia de este texto? ¿Cómo da forma eso a nuestra interpretación de estas palabras?
- ¿Quién fue el autor de este texto? ¿Qué sabemos de él/ella? ¿Cómo moldea eso nuestra comprensión de estas palabras?
Pida a los estudiantes que revisen sus folletos completos de la Actividad 1.
Comience el seminario con 10 estudiantes en el medio del salón de clases. Invite a los estudiantes que no están en el seminario a “tocar” o “tocar” a otros estudiantes para que todos tengan la oportunidad de participar. Recuerde a los estudiantes que esto no es un debate y que no hay respuestas correctas o incorrectas. El propósito de esta actividad es explorar un evento a través de la lente de la identidad, el respeto y la inclusión.
Después del seminario, invite a los estudiantes a volver a su asiento y escriba sus pensamientos sobre su experiencia en su organizador gráfico.
Tener una discusión en clase.
- ¿Qué aprendiste sobre este evento?
- ¿Cómo su lente de identidad, respeto e inclusión cambió su perspectiva sobre el evento?
- ¿Cómo fue la asignación y el seminario socrático un ejemplo de inclusión?
- ¿Qué podríamos haber hecho para que fuera más inclusivo?
- ¿Cómo se refleja la identidad en el comportamiento?
- ¿Te sientes lo suficientemente seguro y cómodo para ser tu verdadero y auténtico yo en la escuela y en el hogar? Si es así, ¿por qué? Si no, ¿por qué no?
- ¿Cuál es la relación entre identidad, respeto e inclusión?
- ¿Qué tienen que ver estas ideas con la empatía?
- ¿Cómo podemos ser nosotros mismos en un mundo donde las personas usan 👍,👎,❤️para juzgar quiénes somos y cómo vivimos nuestras vidas?
- ¿Cómo podemos crear un salón de clases y una escuela donde nos tratemos con respeto?
- Reconoce tu propia identidad.
- Conozca a las personas más allá de lo observable.
- Reconocer cómo somos iguales.
- Honra cómo somos diferentes.
- Celebra cómo somos diferentes.
- Piensa en cómo te sentirías y trata a los demás con el mismo respeto.
- Cree un espacio donde todos sean vistos, incluidos y celebrados.
- Explore, participe y evalúe con respeto y empatía ideas complejas, múltiples perspectivas y experiencias de vida.
- Ayude a los estudiantes a reconocer grupos de personas para los que puedan tener un “punto ciego”. Un punto ciego se refiere a una persona o un grupo de personas de las que no ha sido consciente, o con las que lucha para empatizar. Explique a los estudiantes qué es un punto ciego y pídales que reflexionen sobre personas o grupos de personas potenciales para los que pueden tener un punto ciego. Aquí hay una lista de posibles “puntos ciegos”:
- Alguien de una raza diferente
- Religión
- Antecedentes socioeconómicos
- Personas cuya apariencia física es diferente a la tuya.
- Miembros de la comunidad LGBTQ+
- Puntos de vista políticos que difieren del suyo (aborto, derecho a portar armas, matrimonio homosexual, vacunas, partido político, etc.)
Una vez que los estudiantes identifiquen sus puntos ciegos potenciales, explíqueles que aquí es donde comienza el trabajo duro. Estas son personas por las que debes practicar el respeto.
- Para llevar los puntos ciegos un paso más allá, puede hacer que los estudiantes elijan uno de sus puntos ciegos para practicar el respeto y la empatía. Esto se verá como un proyecto de investigación, pero con un resultado de por vida adjunto. Haga que los estudiantes encuentren recursos de su punto ciego (libros, podcasts, videos de YouTube, documentales, artículos, entrevistas, etc.) para sumergirse y practicar el respeto. Pídales que registren cuando muestren coraje o reconozcan la vulnerabilidad.
- Convierta esta investigación en un proyecto culminante donde los estudiantes descubran una manera de exhibir su crecimiento y aprendizaje y permitan que otros tengan la misma oportunidad de practicar el respeto con ese grupo.
